Exciting Climate Change CPD Opportunities

Last updated: 24th Sep 2009 at 13:09

Manchester Development Education Project has partnered with the Science Learning
Centre North West and Manchester Metropolitan University to develop and accredit an
exciting new course of workshops on climate change. This course will:

• equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach about climate
change in schools and colleges
• explore the evidence for climate change, analyse different viewpoints and make
links between science and society
• introduce methodology suitable to investigating complex controversial issues with
pupils.

Participants will be introduced to a variety of practical activities related to climate
science, and will be encouraged to explore their use as classroom experiments
and demonstrations. Participants will also explore the use of several participatory
teaching and learning tools and techniques in classrooms, particularly in relation to the
discussion of controversial issues. Opportunities will exist to link this study to recent
educational initiatives such as ‘How science works' and the revised KS3 curriculum.

The emphasis throughout the course will be the creative application of knowledge
learnt to classroom practice. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own
learning and performance at each stage, and to engage in critical peer feedback. A
detailed reading list will be provided to enable deeper exploration of the issues.

All participants will be given the opportunity to register free of charge for a masters
level course at Manchester Metropolitan University. Participants will be encouraged
to develop, deliver and evaluate a project or set of teaching resources related to
climate change, and then to submit this work for 20 masters level credits.

The dates for the next delivery of this course are 25 November 2009, 10 February
2010 and 26 May 2010, and different material will be covered on each day.
Participants who are unable to attend all workshops are welcome to attend either day
one or day two separately.
